Historical Perspective

I’m reading the first volume of Robert Caro’s biography on Lyndon Johnson after seeing an interview on Charlie Rose. There was an interesting section on the Depression that helped me put the current Congressional situation in perspective. Basically the Congress and President Hoover spent two years futzing around in 1931 and 1932 while things got worse and worse. It got to the point where the Red Cross and the Salvation Army ran out of money and people were literally starving. Finally FDR was elected and he got things done. So the current ineptitude of our Congress is not unprecedented and the overall situation is not nearly as bad.
